Congratulations to the Overton ISD Board of Trustees

– Region 7 Board of the Year! –

Overton ISD Board

Overton ISD is proud to announce that our Board of Trustees has been named Region 7’s Outstanding School Board of the Year by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). This prestigious honor reflects the Board’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, ethical leadership, and student-centered decision-making.

Led by Board President Shane McCasland, Vice President Mike Rogers, Secretary Pam Raney, Assistant Secretary Sarah Stuart, and Trustees Mary Leigh Dike, Scotty Moore, and Haylee Finley, the Overton ISD Board has guided the district through a period of remarkable growth and innovation.

Their leadership has fueled major initiatives such as:

  • The launch and expansion of the Northeast Texas Career and Technology Education Center (NETCTEC)—a regional consortium that provides dual credit and industry certifications to students from five area districts.

  • The implementation of the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) to reward teacher excellence based on measurable student growth.

  • A creative partnership with Teachworthy that enables Overton ISD to support current employees with proven commitment and talent as they work toward earning full teacher certification.

  • Bold instructional improvements, including the phased adoption of the state’s Bluebonnet OER curriculum and the transition to a four-day instructional week.

  • A strong emphasis on fiscal responsibility, transforming a one-year deficit into a stable and growing fund balance—while maintaining support for staff, instruction, and facilities.

Beyond strategic planning and governance, the Board consistently models harmonious teamwork, ethical conduct, and a deep commitment to placing the needs of students first—even when decisions are difficult or unpopular.

This recognition is a reflection not only of the Board’s leadership but of the shared commitment of our staff, students, families, and community. Please join us in congratulating our trustees on this well-deserved honor!

It’s a Great Day to be a Mustang—especially with this Mustang Board at the helm!

89th Texas Legislature

89th Legislature: Over 100 School-related Bills Passed in 89th Texas Legislature

The 89th Texas Legislature wrapped up its 2025 regular session having passed more than 100 education-related bills—part of nearly 1,200 total bills approved. This legislative activity represents one of the most sweeping sets of education changes in recent years.

What does this mean for Overton ISD families? These new laws cover everything from school safety, student discipline, and instructional materials to teacher pay, parental rights, academic accountability, and digital device use in schools. While not all changes go into effect immediately, many will shape how schools operate, how students learn, and how communities engage with their local districts.

We’re reviewing the legislation closely to ensure OISD remains compliant and continues to serve students with excellence and care.

It's also worth noting that a special session has been called, which could bring additional legislation that impacts public education. We’ll continue to monitor developments and update you as needed.

As always, thank you for partnering with us as we navigate this season of statewide change. It’s a great day to be a Mustang!

Overton ISD to Launch PayK12 for Tickets and Online Payments

Overton ISD is excited to announce the upcoming implementation of PayK12, a new platform that will allow parents and community members to purchase event tickets online and, over time, pay for various district fees and merchandise using credit or debit cards.

This will be a staggered rollout, beginning with ticket sales for school events such as athletic games and performances. Additional features—such as payment options for student fees, spirit wear, and other district items—will be added throughout the year.

Our goal is to make payments more convenient, secure, and accessible for families and community supporters. As we expand the system, we believe it will enhance the way we serve our stakeholders and provide a better overall experience for everyone involved.

Stay tuned for updates and instructions as each new feature becomes available. We look forward to making it easier than ever to support Overton ISD!

Supporting Student Growth: OISD to Enforce New Cell Phone Policy Under HB 1481

Phone-Free in Overton ISD

This school year, Overton ISD will implement a new student cell phone policy in accordance with Texas House Bill 1481, which requires all public schools to prohibit student use of personal communication devices—including cell phones, smartwatches, and similar items—during the school day.

We recognize that there are many perspectives on this topic. For some families, the idea of being separated from a phone during the day may feel inconvenient or even unsettling. However, the goal behind this policy is not control—it is care. The decision to remove phones from the learning environment is rooted in both law and research and reflects our deep commitment to supporting the healthy development of our students.

In his recent book, The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt presents compelling data showing how constant access to smartphones is impacting children’s mental health. He links the rise of anxiety, depression, and social disconnection to the growing presence of digital devices in young lives. Just as importantly, he highlights how screen time often replaces the real-world experiences and interactions that are essential for healthy brain development. Haidt challenges communities to “return childhood to children” by creating environments where they can focus, connect, and grow without the constant pressure of digital distraction.

That’s exactly what this new policy is designed to do.

By removing phones during the school day, we can help students be more present in the classroom, reduce distractions, and encourage face-to-face interaction with their peers. While no single change can solve every challenge, we believe this one will make a meaningful difference—in academics, behavior, and emotional well-being.

Overton ISD will continue to support students with documented medical or educational needs, and we are committed to working with families to ensure a smooth and respectful rollout of the policy.

We appreciate your support as we take this step to prioritize student growth and wellness—together.

Overton ISD Moves to Bluebonnet Curriculum for Core Math and Reading

OISD Bluebonnet Learning

Beginning this school year, Overton ISD is proud to implement the Bluebonnet Curriculum for all elementary reading and math, as well as grades 6–8 math and Algebra I. This new curriculum is part of a statewide initiative to ensure all students benefit from high-quality, research-based instructional materials aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

Over the summer, our teachers participated in multiple trainings to prepare for this rollout. Their dedication and preparation reflect OISD’s ongoing commitment to instructional excellence. The Bluebonnet Curriculum is built on evidence-based strategies proven to boost student learning, and we are committed to implementing it with fidelity to maximize results.

This important step forward also reflects the leadership of the Overton ISD Board of Trustees, who continue to set a strong vision for student success. Through their focus on measurable goals in reading, math, and life-readiness, our Board has made it clear that every Mustang deserves access to instruction that is rigorous, engaging, and effective. Their support for high-quality materials and professional development ensures our teachers have the tools they need to help every student grow.

Looking ahead, OISD plans to expand Bluebonnet implementation to include secondary reading, language arts, Geometry, and Algebra II as materials become available—hopefully as early as next school year.

We’re excited about the road ahead and grateful for the leadership, teamwork, and community support that make it possible.

Mustang Football Gears Up for a Gritty 2025 Season!

Overton Mustand Football

With preseason buzz building, Overton ISD is ready to blaze into the 2025 football season—and the excitement is real! Featured prominently in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Mustangs are once again competing in one of the toughest small-school districts in Texas, and they’re aiming to make some serious noise.

This year, four teams in district 11 2A Div II—Lovelady, Grapeland, Mount Enterprise, and Overton—are all ranked in the state’s preseason Top 25. That means every district matchup will feel like playoff football, and our Mustangs are embracing the challenge head-on.

Last year’s squad made an incredible run to the regional semi-finals, marking one of the most successful Mustang football seasons in recent memory. While we graduated a talented senior class—this year’s edition of the Mustangs is focused, fired up, and ready to raise the bar even higher.

Coach Scotty Laymance and his staff have set a clear tone: tough, disciplined football that plays with heart. With a hungry group of returners and a wave of young talent stepping up, this year’s roster is ready to carry on the tradition of Mustang toughness and pride.

With a proud history, Mustang Football remains a cornerstone of Overton pride. This year's squad knows they’re not just playing for wins—they’re playing for legacy.

2025 Season Opener(s)

  • Season Opener (Away): Friday, August 29 at Alba-Golden

  • Home Opener: Friday, September 5 vs. Carlisle – a long-time East Texas rivalry that always delivers fireworks

The lights are about to come on, the stands will be packed, and our Mustangs are ready. We know our entire community will be there to rally behind this team and help make 2025 another season to remember.

Mustang Band Marches into Another Exciting Season!

Mustang Band

The sights and sounds of marching season are just around the corner, and the Overton Mustang Band is tuning up for what promises to be one of its most exciting years yet! After earning the prestigious UIL State Sweepstakes Award for two years in a row, our band program is marching forward with even more energy, more spirit, and more Mustang pride.

This year, the Mustang Band is adding a brand-new element to its performances—twirlers! These visual performers will bring an extra layer of flair and excitement to Friday night shows and competition performances.

Now entering their second year, Mr. and Mrs. Parker have brought incredible passion and structure to the band program. Their leadership has helped elevate the standard of excellence, and their energy is contagious across the entire band hall, campus and community.

All incoming 7th grade marchers and anyone not in band last year should plan to attend New Marcher Camp on July 30th and 31st. This is also a great opportunity for middle school students who want an extra challenge. Come learn fundamentals, meet fellow bandmates, and get acclimated to the Mustang Band culture.

From football games and pep rallies to contests and parades, the fall is packed with exciting band events. You can find all the important dates in the Overton Mustang Band Semester At-a-Glance, available now on the Overton Mustang Band Facebook page.

Whether you're cheering from the stands, volunteering behind the scenes, or marching on the field, this season is set to be one to remember. We’re proud of our Mustang musicians and can’t wait to see them shine.

Mustang Volleyball Ready to Rise in 2025 Season!

Volleyball Players

Excitement is building as the Overton Lady Mustang Volleyball Team prepares to kick off what promises to be a strong and competitive 2025 season! With more experience on the court, a pool of returning talent, and a dynamic new head coach at the helm, this year’s team is ready to take the next step.

Last season, the Lady Mustangs were a young squad with just two seniors leading the way. Despite their youth, they battled into the bi-district playoffs and gained valuable experience that laid a solid foundation for future success. Now, with a more seasoned roster and strong team chemistry, expectations are high.

We’re excited to welcome Coach Kolebi Spikes as the new Head Volleyball Coach. Coach Spikes brings more than a decade of coaching experience, most recently as Head Volleyball Coach and Girls Athletic Coordinator at Center High School. Her passion for player development, competitive grit, and team-first culture is already energizing the program.

This year’s squad is deeper, faster, and more focused, with a talented mix of rising seniors and underclassmen eager to build on last year’s experience. The athletes have been working hard throughout the offseason and are determined to return to the playoffs—this time with higher aspirations and greater confidence.

The season gets rolling with the annual Alumni Game on Friday, August 1, offering fans a fun and competitive preview of what’s to come. Then, the official home opener takes place Tuesday, August 12, when the Lady Mustangs host San Augustine in what promises to be an exciting start to the new season. Get ready to fill the gym with Mustang pride!

A Summer Project with Purpose:

Thank You to Our Student-Workers and Mr. Cliff Wilson

Board Room Before-After

This summer marked the completion of a meaningful renovation at Overton ISD, and we want to express our appreciation to our summer student-workers, Mr. Cliff Wilson, and Mrs. Kathy Calhoun for their contributions to the transformation of the Overton ISD District Board Room.

Over the past two summers, Mr. Wilson and his students in the Construction Management program have worked diligently to breathe new life into the space. The project began with the dismantling of the half-circle council table from the former Overton City Hall—thank you to the City of Overton for sharing this historic piece. The students then modified the stage in our Admin Building to recreate and reinstall the table as the focal point of our Board of Trustees’ meeting space.

Improvements over the two summers included:

  • Installing new countertops

  • Removing old carpet to uncover original hardwood floors

  • Laying new carpet in the foyer and along the updated stage

  • Refinishing the hardwood, painting woodwork, and completing detailed trim around the seating area

To complete the room, Mrs. Kathy Calhoun assisted by recovering the pew cushions in a fabric and color that complements both our district color scheme and the building’s history as a former church sanctuary. Her efforts helped tie the room together in a way that’s both respectful of the past and fitting for a modern boardroom.

The end result is a space that blends tradition with functionality—a dignified, welcoming setting for school board meetings and community gatherings. More importantly, it stands as a shining example of the real-world skills being developed through our Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathways.

Thank you to Mr. Wilson, our dedicated student-workers, and Mrs. Calhoun for your time, effort, and craftsmanship—you’ve created something truly special.
